Shavano Park Dining and Entertainment


This month, we’re exploring the Shavano Park neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas.  This week, we’ll be taking a look at the dining and entertainment options available in this little city within a city.

Paesanos 1604 serves up innovative Italian dishes in a setting that’s “Hill Country Meets Tuscan Villa”.  Famous for their Shrimp Paesano, they also get high marks for their Red Snapper, Mushroom Ravioli, and Braised Veal.  Regulars also praise the service for being attentive and making you feel comfortable.

Frederick’s Bistro is as renowned for their atmosphere as for their food.  Serving up French food, sort of a rarity in the middle of Texas, Frederick’s dishes may cost a little bit more, but diners report it is well worth it.  Frederick’s never lets you forget where you are though, dishes like their Escargot with Chorizo (!) marry the French with the Texas.  Viva La Texas!

The Rose Theatre Company is a great choice if you are near Shavano Park and want some entertainment.  In addition to regular nightly theatre, ranging from Steel Magnolias to 60’s Rock Musicals, The Rose also offers acting classes for children and adults and birthday parties.  There’s a little something for everyone at the Rose.

502 Bar is a great place for drinks with friends or coworkers.  They’ve got an extensive drink menu and a cozy environment for hanging out and and relaxing.

Cedar Park Schools and Employers


This month, we’re spotlighting Cedar Park, a suburb of Austin, Texas.  This week, we’ll be taking a look at the schools and employers in this town Northwest of Austin.

Students in Cedar Park attend schools in the TEA Recognized Leander School District.  Students in grades 9-12 attend the Recognized Cedar Park High School, or Vista Ridge High School.  Cedar Park High’s mascot is the Timberwolves and Vista Ridge’s is the Rangers.

Cedar Park students in grades six through eight attend Cedar Park Middle School, Henry Middle School, or Running Brushy Middle School, which are all ranked Recognized. 

Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade are sent to one of eight elementary schools:  Cypress, Naumann, Cox, Faubion, Knowles, Westside, Deer Creek, or Reagan.  Cypress, Naumann, Cox, Faubion, and Knowles are all ranked Recognized, while Westside, Deer Creek, and Reagan are ranked Exemplary.

As far as Employers, Cedar Park’s convenient location between Austin and Round Rock makes it an easy commute to many employers.  

Cedar Park is less than three miles from Lakeline Mall, which has many jobs available in retail outlets, restaurants and movie theaters.

Shavano Park


This month, we’re going to be exploring Shavano Park, a suburb of San Antonio, Texas.  Located just twelve miles north of downtown San Antonio, Shavano Park is a city within a city, surrounded by San Antonio on all sides.  Shavano Park is bounded by Loop 1604 to the north, Huebner Park on the south, Lockhill Selma on the west and Salado Creek on the east.  Shavano Park is popular for those looking for an easy commute into San Antonio, well-rated Northside School 
 District Schools, and its proximity to the Texas Hill Country.  

Shavano was first started in approximately 1881 on the banks of Olmos Creek.  It was originally a stagecoach and rail stop between San Antonio and Boerne.  The City of Shavano Park was once part of Stowers Ranch, but in 1947, Wallace Rogers and Sons bought the land and begin turning it into a residential development in 1948. The City of Shavano Park was incorporated as a general law city in 1956, a designation conferred upon Texas towns of less than 5,000 people. 
 Currently, there are about 3,000 residents of Shavano Park.

In the coming weeks, we’ll take a look at the dining and entertainment options, schools and employers and apartments that make this affluent suburb such a popular place to live.

Cedar Park Dining and Entertainment


This month, we’re spotlighting Cedar Park, a suburb north of Austin, Texas.  This week, we’ll be taking a look at the dining and entertainment options in this suburb popular with families looking for an affordable place to live.

Daichi Sushi and Grill is beloved by regulars for the great tasting, fresh sushi at affordable prices.  They also have an extensive sake and beer selection.  The restaurant is small, so you may have to wait a few minutes for a table, but it’s worth it!

CR Surf and Turf Seafood and Steak serves up well-seasoned steak and seafood that keeps them coming back.  The calamari gets especially high marks for being “out of this world” tasty, and the special house seafood sauce has a special place in patrons’ hearts.

Los Chilaquiles Bar and Mexican Grill serves up Tex-Mex with a twist.  They even make your guacamole at the table, so you get the freshest guac possible.  Their margaritas are delicious and boozed appropriately, plus they’re cheap during happy hour. What more could you want from a Mexican restaurant?

For entertainment, Cedar Park Center is a huge, state of the art sports and entertainment complex where you can watch the Austin Toros play basketball or the Texas Stars play Hockey.  The hottest musical acts also tour through the Cedar Park Center, so watch the schedule to make sure you don’t miss your favorite.

The Dig Pub is a great local bar that proves you don’t have to leave Cedar Park to get a pint.  They have an extensive beer and wine selection, food, plus games like darts and foosball.  Ample indoor and outdoor seating means you’ll be comfortable here no matter the weather.

Cedar Park


This month, we’ll be exploring Cedar Park, a suburb of Austin, Texas.  Located 20 miles Northwest of downtown Austin, Cedar Park is popular with those looking for well-rated schools and affordable housing, while still being close enough to commute into Austin. 

Cedar Park was ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the fastest growing suburbs in the country and has grown by more than 400% in the last ten years.  It is the third largest city in the Austin area with a population of over 54,000 residents.  Family Circle magazine ranked Cedar Park “One of the Best Places to Raise a Family”.

Native Americans settled in the area now known as Cedar Park approximately 10,000 years ago, and lived there up until 1800.  Settlers began moving to the area in the 1840’s and started small communities which they named Buttercup, Doddsville, and Running Brushy.  George and Hattie Cluck and their family moved to the area in 1873, helping the area grow into Running Brushy, which was renamed Brueggerhoff and then Cedar Park in 1887.

Alamo Heights Apartments

Jollyville


This month, we’ll be spotlighting the Jollyville neighborhood of Austin, Texas.  Jollyville is located north of Austin between 183 and Mopac/Loop one, just south of SH 45.  This community is popular for its proximity to Austin and great Round Rock Schools.

Henry Rhodes was the first resident in 1841.  He settled in the area thanks to a land grant from the Republic of Texas for 1,000 acres.  Jollyville was named for John G. Jolly who bought 160 acres in 1866.  Jolly and his family ran a blacksmith shop and a store.  The Jollys generously gifted land for a school and a cemetary to the city, but Jollyville continued to be sparsely populated.  In 1960, only twenty families lived there.  However, Jollyville eventually became a bustling suburban area as Austin grew and had 10,000 residents by 1980.

Jollyville Schools and Employers


This month, we’re taking a look at the Jollyville neighborhood of Austin, Texas.  This week, we’ll be exploring the schools and employers in this Northwest Austin area.

Students in Jollyville attend schools in the prestigious Round Rock School District.  Children in grades nine through twelve go to the TEA Recognized McNeil High School.  McNeil High School was ranked national 696 on U.S. News and World Report's 2013 list of Best High Schools in the Country and ranked 76th among Texas High Schools.  

Deerpark Middle School is a TEA Recognized School that serves Jollyville students in grades six through eight.  Their mascot is the Rangers and their colors are black and red.

Jollyville children in grades Kindergarten through fifth go to either Jollyville Elementary or Live Oak Elementary.  Jollyville is ranked Recognized and their mascot is the Jaguars.  Live Oak is also a TEA Recognized school, their mascot is the Indians and their colors are green and white.  

Jollyville is conveniently located just over twenty minutes from downtown Austin and fifteen minutes from Round Rock, putting it in the perfect position for a quick and easy commute to employers in Austin and the suburbs.

URS Corporation is one of the largest engineering design services firms in the world and a leading U.S. Federal Government Contractor.  Their Austin offices are located 2 miles north of Jollyville.

Lakeline Mall is also just a hop, skip and a jump from Jollyville.  The wide variety of stores and restaurants in and around the mall provide many different positions from wait staff to retail employee.

Alamo Heights Schools and Employers


This month, we’re exploring the Alamo Heights neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas.  This week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the schools and employers in this central San Antonio neighborhood.

Alamo Heights is served by the Alamo Heights School District.  The high school is Alamo Heights High School, which was selected as one of the top 1% of high schools in the country by the Washington Post.  Newsweek also ranked AHHS as 194th out of the top 1,300 public high schools in the nation, and Texas Monthly recognized the school for excellence in all four of the academic subjects.  Their mascot is the Mule and their colors are Blue and Gold.

Alamo Heights Junior School serves grades 6 through 8 and their mission statement is to provide academic excellence by actively engaging all students in a personally challenging curriculum that is developmentally responsive and socially equitable.

Alamo Heights is served by two elementary schools, Woodridge and Cambridge.  Woodridge Elementary is ranked Recognized by the TEA and their mission is to put students first by addressing the whole child, academic, social, emotional and physical.  Cambridge Elementary first opened as a one-room school house in 1909, but now serves 852 students in first through fifth grades.  

Students in Kindergarten and Pre-k attend Howard Early Childhood Center.  Howard Early Childhood Center is unique in its incorporation of curriculum for children ages 4-6 that are transitioning into the school setting. Filled with energy and creativity, Howard helps develop young minds for their future.

One of the perks of living in Alamo Heights is being so close to all the employers in Downtown San Antonio.  These include USAA Life Insurance, who employs 15,000 people in the San Antonio area. USAA offers insurance, banking and investing to people and their families who serve, or who have served, in the US Military.  They ranked 17th on Fortune Magazine’s Best Places to Work list in 2011, and have been recognized as one of America’s best employers for reservists and veterans.

HEB is another major employer in the San Antonio area, with 14,588 employees in San Antonio.  They operate several grocery stores in the area and their retail headquarters are in downtown San Antonio.  They ranked 12th on Forbes’ 2012 list of the largest American Private Companies.

Jollyville Dining and Entertainment


This month, we’re spotlighting the Jollyville Neighborhood of Austin, Texas.  This week, we’ll be exploring the dining and entertainment options in this Northwest Austin neighborhood.

Shandeez Grill serves up authentic Persian Cuisine with a smile. You may not expect to find such exotic fare in Northwest Austin, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised!  Visitors rave about the remarkably tender chicken, flavorful Basmati Rice, and desserts like Baklava and Mahkloot.

Zakia’s Greek Cuisine is beloved by those in Jollyville for its authentic Greek food, as well as fun extras like a Hookah Lounge in the evenings.  The souvlaki (both lamb and beef versions), beef shwarma, baba ganoush, and saffron rice all get hearty recommendations from patrons.

Hot Breads Bakery and Cafe is actually an Indian Restaurant, something you’d never guess from its name.  It also has a wide variety of bakery goods, from Birthday Cakes to Pastries.  Both the Indian Food and the baked goods are popular with visitors.
